Natural hydraulic lime (NHL binder) is made from limestone that contains a suitable proportion of clay or silicates. The clay or silicate content ensures its “underwater”, partially hydraulic binding capacity. Mortars containing NHL are relatively resistant to water. Despite the partially hydraulic properties of NHL-type limes, the majority of the binding is still due to the reaction with CO2, i.e. the formation of calcium carbonate. For this reason, the favorable properties of air-hardening lime, such as high vapor diffusivity, are also present in NHL-labeled lime. Due to the properties of natural hydraulic lime, it can be placed between air-hardening natural lime and Roman cement.
